Getting started
Open Xymatics in your browser, then choose Try an example track or Upload audio to open a file from your device. The file stays on your device. Switch views from the View menu while the track plays. The field guide explains every control, and How it works shows the calculations behind each score.
A file won’t open or play
- WAV and MP3 work everywhere. FLAC, OGG, M4A and AIFF depend on your browser or macOS version.
- Whole-track analysis covers up to 10 minutes. Longer tracks still play with live visualizations.
- Files with copy protection (DRM), such as some purchased or streamed music, can’t be decoded.
- If one browser can’t decode a file, try another, or convert the file to WAV.
Reading the results
Harmony, signal integrity and acoustic energy are measurements and estimates of sound, not judgments of music. The guide’s calculations walk from frequency snapshots to each final number, and every view lists the equations and assumptions behind its picture.
Premium purchases
Premium (the Discover lessons, plus video export and live listening) is in development and not for sale yet. When it launches, you will buy and manage it through Apple:
- Restore on a new device: choose Restore purchases in the app while signed in with the same Apple ID.
- Cancel a subscription: open your App Store account settings and manage subscriptions, as with any App Store subscription.
- Refunds: Apple handles refunds for App Store purchases at reportaproblem.apple.com.
See pricing for the plans.
Mac app (early access)
The free app is also packaged for the Mac, to run offline. A native app for Mac, iPhone and iPad will replace it on the App Store.
This early access build is not Apple-notarized. After trying to open it, you may need to approve the app in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway.
Common questions
Is Xymatics free?
Yes. The web app and the Mac app are free, with every current feature: the visualizations, playback, analysis, Interval Lab and field guide. Premium is an optional in-app purchase that is still in development.
Do I need to install anything?
No. Xymatics runs in a modern desktop browser. The Mac app is optional, for working offline.
Does my audio leave my device?
No. In the browser, the page decodes and analyzes your file on your device and has no upload feature. The Mac app does the same on your Mac, and its security policy only allows connections to the app itself.
What will Premium add, and when?
The Discover lessons: interactive lessons on the science behind sound’s mysteries, each with its equations, sources and limits. Premium also adds full-length, watermark-free video export and live listening from a microphone or any input, in the native app for Mac, iPhone and iPad. It is in development and there is no date yet.
How much will Premium cost?
$4.99 a month, $39 a year (about $3.25 a month) or $89 once, bought in the app through Apple’s In-App Purchase. One purchase unlocks Mac, iPhone and iPad with the same Apple ID.
Does it tell me whether music is “good”?
No. Xymatics describes measurable qualities of sound. Harmony and acoustic energy are estimates, and tension can be an intentional part of music.
What does Xymatics have to do with cymatics?
Cymatics is the study of visible sound: sand on a vibrating plate gathers along the lines that barely move. Xymatics takes its name and starting point from it. The views are mathematical models driven by the music, not simulations of matter.
